Encourage to Discourage

Art-SuppliesArt can be express in so many ways and can be put on may different canvases … I just hoped my son wouldn’t have chosen my brand new cars leather seats.

Everyone knows the foundation of the best art is what is displayed on. Art can be displayed on so many different types of canvases or surfaces and that is what makes it special. Art supplies are not cheap spending money on art supplies can brake the bank. But there is something about the a blank canvas, a pad of paper, and a new paint color that just gets your mind going. But unless you’ve won the lottery (which is unlikely), have an investor (even less likely), or enjoy enacting the role of starving artist (are you insane?), your canvas is the foundation of it all.

I have always encouraged my kids to be artistic and expressive which I have found out is great for them and their growth, but is not always good for me as the mother. For instance my 11 year old daughter (my only baby girl) started Junior High School this year. As if that is not scary enough she asked me if she could dye her hair purple. Yes purple not light purple, not just the tips but full on dark purple the entire thing. My first reaction was no way are you kidding me we are not doing that! Then I stopped myself  and remembered back to when I was 11 and the only thing I really wanted was a perm (even though my hair is naturally curly) everyone was getting one and my mom said no way until I was in high school. I was devastated and felt left out so I thought you know what as long as she promised to make good grades and stay focused that I would do it. Little did I know that the very next day was picture day … yes I was thrilled. But they still turned out beautiful.

Another one of those times was when my husband decided it was time to get me a new car and I was so excited. I have been waiting for this car for sometime now so when I saw my 5 year old had decided to use my back seat as his canvas my heart just sank and flames started to build in my eyes. My 5 year old has learned how to write his name and he is so good at it. He turned my backseat into a gallery of M’s for everyone to see on my leather seats. By the time he was done wiping off all of those I was pretty sure he would NEVER do that again. And yes I was bale to get to off after many different types of cleaner.

So I know creating art is a great way for children to make choices and solve problems. Every step involves making a decision: what color to use, how to make a line, what size to make something (just not in my brand new car 🙂 With every choice the object becomes more and more their own.

Everyone has an imagination. Art takes it a step further. through art, children create something that, until that point, was only imagined. Children who may be having difficulties in other parts of the school curriculum may find an expressive outlet through art. It’s a way to uncover talent that may not be seen otherwise. Art is a means of communicating ideas, feelings, and solutions in a way other than verbally or written.

I know I say it a lot but I think art is so important in everyones lives. Let me know how art has impacted your life or how you choose to express your art. Share stories and or pictures with us. We are going to be running a contest so the person with the most likes on the picture or story that they share with us will receive a cute gift basket for participating in our fun.
