How art has helped me raise my Children

I grew up in a very creative house as a child and I contribute my passion and love for life to that. As a mother of 3 amazing children I want them to be just as passionate, loving and creative as they can be.

I cannot plant imagination into my children. I can, however, provide an environment where their creativity is not just another mess to clean up but welcome evidence of grappling successfully with boredom. It is possible for boredom to deliver us to our best selves, the ones that long for risk and illumination and unspeakable beauty.

We cannot give our children talent or creativity, but we can help open up the eyes ears and min to help our children gain access to a creative way of seeing. I believe that everyone is is creative in some way or another. Some people are born with natural talent a steady hand or perfect singing voice and others have to really push for it. Either way you look at it creativity can and will be a way to all of our children to express themselves in their own way.

Recent studies examining creativity have surprised researchers. The researchers began with the assumption that the kids recommended by their art teachers as most creative would be the “artist types” — offbeat, disorganized kids who performed more poorly in other classes at school. They were wrong.

I believe that children who are able to create and express themselves will be able to focus on other classes and or projects in school and life with open eyes. i also think that parents who help their children become emotionally healthy also encourage creativity.

I was able to homeschool my children for about a year because we had moved several times and I felt like ripping the kids out of school over and over again was not right for their emotional health. I was about to work with them with the help of an online school and my children returned to school with an open and clear mind of what learning is all about. My oldest son is now in Honors math at a science and technology school and doing great. My daughter is starting junior high and loves to write her own music and loves to sing to everyone. My youngest is so ready for kindergarten and he doesn’t even start for another year.

All three of my children are so different and amazing that sometimes I wonder how such amazing children all came from me. I know that sounds crazy but they are just great children (I am not sure how to word this it sounds so stupid but I want to say something )

Art may seem like just fun and games and at times it is but you not realize that you child is actually learning a lot through exploring the arts. Children can gain useful life skills through art. So I encourage to to encourage your children to be creative and you will see the skills your children pick up.

Communication skills by expressing emotion in are for instance drawing a park scene  or playing siblings brings up the emotion the felt when they were in the moment like happiness or joy.

“My kids express things through their art that they don’t even have words for yet.” – Diana (another mommy artist)

I also feel children can get problem solving skills. Art helps my children feel willing to try new ideas and experiment in different ways of creating what they see in their ow minds. This is kind of like scientist who work and study to find the end solution. Social and emotional kills seem to grow as your children are able to show their individuality with the success and personal accomplishments.

“After my kids spend time creating process art, they focus better in math, science, and other academic assignments.” – Marta (mommy)

Through self-expression and creativity my children’s skills have developed naturally and they ability to create and soar are endless. Bring art into your children lives but do not criticize any of their art remember that talent and creativity are two different things. Your child does not have to create a masterpiece to be creative or expressive. Art is a process not a product.

I have aslo included my husband in painting with us so that he can have that same love for art. My husband use to tell me that he couldn’t draw a straight line if his life depended on it and my response was “That is what rulers are for”. My father use to tell me that. I use to get so upset that I did not have the same natural talent as my father and brother, but my father would always tell me you don’t want your art to look like everyone elses and if you want to draw a straight line use a ruler.

So bring art and creativity into your family lives and find a way to open up the eyes ears and minds of your children by letting them be creative.
